VIDEO: Managing anxiety disorders during the transition to adulthood

TORONTO — John T. Walkup, MD, a professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, discusses the management of anxiety disorders among adolescents beginning to transition into adulthood.“The best way for psychiatrists to understand this population is to think about when childhood anxiety disorders actually begin, which is somewhere between the ages of 6 and 12 years,” Walkup told Healio.com/Psychiatry. “The coping strategy anxious children use to manage their worries and fears is avoidance. Moms and dads of these kids oftentimes find ways of accommodating their fears in order to keep their kids less stressed and less anxious.”
