Significantly higher mortality rates associated with cold temperatures

Moderately cold-temperatures are the cause for substantially more weather-related deaths than either extreme hot or cold temperatures or moderately hot-temperatures, according to recently published study results in The Lancet.  “It’s often assumed that extreme weather causes the majority of deaths, with most previous research focusing on the effects of extreme heat waves. Our findings … show that the majority of these deaths actually happen on moderately hot and cold days, with most deaths caused by moderately cold temperatures,” Antonio Gasparrini, PhD, department of medical statistics, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said in a press release.
