Patients with Sjögren’s syndrome may be at higher risk for psychiatric disorder

Patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome were at a higher risk for depression, anxiety and sleep disorders than healthy individuals, according to the recently published study results.Researchers studied 2,686 patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (SS) and 10,744 control participants without SS identified through the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan. Patients with SS were diagnosed between Jan. 1, 2000, and Dec. 31, 2008, had a median age of 45.31 years and a median follow-up of 4.7 years. Each patient with SS was matched with four patients for age and sex. Patients with an existing diagnosis of a psychiatric disorder were excluded from either group.
