High-dose inhaled nitric oxide safe, tolerable for pediatric bronchiolitis

DENVER — Intermittent high-dose inhaled nitric oxide increased the percentage of methemoglobin in hospitalized infants with bronchiolitis when compared with standard oxygen therapy, according to data presented at the American Thoracic Society International Conference.Asher Tal, MD, of Advanced Inhalation Therapies, and colleagues conducted a double blind, randomized controlled study of 43 infants, aged 2 to 12 months, to determine the mean percent methemoglobin (MetHb) associated with inhaled nitric oxide (NO). The researchers also sought to determine differences in lengths of hospital stay and oxygen treatment.
