Text message intervention improves birth control adherence

Women who received text-message appointment reminders were more likely to receive their scheduled Depo-Provera injections, compared with women who only received phone call reminders, according to a recently published study in the Journal of Adolescent Health. DepoText is a text messaging reminder system for communicating sexual health messages, according to the study. The system relays a series of messages to patients starting 72 hours prior their scheduled appointment time. Additionally, DepoText relays messages regarding screening and prevention for STI’s, healthy lifestyle choices and reminders to call their nurse with any problems they may have.
